I am Isabelle, a multidisciplinary and multi-sensory artist curious about exploring the narratives we construct about ourselves—narratives that can either confine or liberate us in our life experiences. My work delves into the complexities of perception and identity, often using my own journey as a focal point to examine the relationship between the self and self-concept.
With a background as a singer and sound healer, I have cultivated a deep connection with sound, which informs my creation of immersive soundscapes. I adopt a multi-disciplinary and multi-sensory approach to art, integrating movement, sound, and visual elements to engage viewers on multiple levels. This holistic methodology allows me to investigate the depths of human experience, encouraging reflection and connection.
My artistic practice is also profoundly influenced by my personal journey of self-exploration. Engaging in practices such as ceremony and vipassana meditation has shaped my process and way of being, fostering a constant evolution in my work. These experiences inform my understanding of presence, mindfulness, and the transformative power of art as a language.
As a movement teacher specialising in yoga and Pilates, I have spent years contemplating our often dysfunctional relationships with our bodies. This exploration has led me to investigate the dichotomy between the body and nature, as well as the various masks we wear that can distance us from our authentic selves. Through my art, I aim to reveal these layers, highlighting themes of vulnerability and authenticity.
I recently spent six months in Brazil, where I engaged in painting and collaboration with other artists. This experience enriched my practice and expanded my understanding of cultural narratives. My primary medium is oil paint, through which I approach the figure with an autobiographical lens that reflects both personal experiences and broader societal themes. I plan to continue working in Brazil.
Community connection has always been integral to my practice. During my time in Brazil, I worked with local schools to provide creative workshops that fostered artistic expression among students. Currently, I am embarking on a solo exhibition documenting my long-standing relationship with Carney's Community, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of disadvantaged and excluded young people through boxing, fitness, and mentorship. Having been part of this community since the age of 18, I am fascinated by the movement and energy that occurs within this space. This inspiration drives me to explore how I might translate that dynamic into my artistic practice.
